  • CHALLENGE Curved Glass Façade

Jones Lang LaSalle chose us to build and install their lighted signs when they moved their Atlanta headquarters.

They are a global leader in the commercial property and investment management businesses. Based in Chicago, they have offices in 80 countries and employ over 90,000 people. They rank at 179 on the Fortune 500 and Fortune lists them among the World’s Most Admired Companies. Ethisphere has just listed them as among World’s Most Ethical Companies for the thirteenth consecutive year. They are also a top player in the Atlanta commercial real-estate market.

JLL moved their Atlanta headquarters to the fifty-story hi-rise at 3344 Peachtree Road, in Buckhead, taking over 20% of the total leasable space. When they did, they contacted Atlanta’s premiere lighted sign specialists.

The two signs we built are LED lighted channel letters and logos measuring just over 7’ and 8’ tall. It was not necessary for us to make them huge, because they are mounted less than 100’ above street level. The installation however was challenging.

We installed both signs in front of curved glass façades that provide no opportunity for attachment. While the conditions behind each façade were somewhat different, the solutions we created were similar. We built a steel framework behind each façade and anchored it to the building structure. From that framework we extended steel arms through the glass to provide structural mounting points. In front of the glass, we attached stringers to those steel arms and then mounted our signs to those stringers.

To accomplish this installation, we conducted precision surveys of the conditions behind the façades and created accurate mechanical drawings to show the relationship of the building attachments, the curved glass façade and its penetrations, and the signs, in three-dimensional space. It is from these drawings that JAMCO, the building’s envelope contractor, cut and drilled new glass panels to replace those that our steel would penetrate. JAMCO’s work was flawless, and we completed the installation without a hitch.

While we are not the only lighted sign contractor in Atlanta, JLL chose Henry Incorporated for our ability to solve complex engineering challenges and coordinate effectively with other trades, because they could not afford to risk the success of this high-profile project. We are proud that we were able to repay their confidence at every step, from design and engineering through installation.
