  • CHALLENGE High quality fit and finish on a short schedule.

Because the roof of this new Hilton property on the Savannah River features a rooftop pool and garden area, the architect opted for sculpture rather than a visually mundane screen to conceal the building’s air handler. The structure is ornately sculpted, painted aluminum with polished granite surrounds framing louvered panels that double as concealed access doors.

The installation window between the cupola’s mounting location being ready, and the deck, roof garden and pergola contractors needing us out of the way was very narrow. Another concern was that hotel guests would be able to see the structure at very close quarters: top notch fit and finish was imperative.

Our design-assist team was able to meet these challenges. By engineering a system whereby the cupola could be pre-built in sections, we had complete control of environmental factors that could have affected the quality. Once all the fit and finish details were in place and the sections test fitted together, it was simply a matter of stacking the pieces on the roof and bolting them together. We were in and out in a fraction of the time traditional construction methods would have required. We, and consequently the GC, had none of the weather delays, debris in the paint, piles of tools, materials and trash on the job site, multiple cycles of punch-list items, or any of the other inconveniences of the on-site, stick built, method.
